Original Medicare covers a lot of your basic health needs, but it doesn’t include prescription drugs, dental, vision, hearing or extras like fitness memberships. Half of all Medicare enrollees – over 30-million people – sign up for plans that provide more coverage than Original Medicare, such as Medicare Advantage.¹ If you want more coverage, Wellpoint offers Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.

You can sign up for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) at any Social Security office or sign up online. You may need the following when you apply:

• Your Social Security card (or record of your number)
• Your original birth certificate
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
• A W-2 form if you’re still working

If you’re receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits at least four months before your 65th birthday, you’re automatically enrolled in Parts A and B. Social Security will send you Medicare information and a Medicare card prior to your 65th birthday.

You may want to consider delaying your enrollment in Medicare until you’re no longer covered by your employer’s healthcare plan.
