Learn ways to cope with a crisis

It’s important to take care of yourself if you’ve witnessed or been impacted by a disaster. Emotions run high in these events, and you aren’t alone in feeling stressed, fear, anger, or grief.

Tips for you

Review these tips for coping with tough emotions to see what might work for you:

  • Talk about the event with trusted friends, family, or a professional counselor.
  • Limit your intake of news about and images of the crisis.
  • Try to get enough rest and eat nutritious foods.
  • Find time for hobbies or social activities, when possible.
  • Manage your tasks by setting priorities.
  • Give yourself time to process what you’ve experienced.

Tips for children

Keep in mind that a child’s response to a crisis will be different from an adult’s response. Here’s how you can help kids during these situations:

  • Answer questions honestly and in a way they can understand.
  • Talk about changes in routine and environment.
  • Give them space to talk freely about what they went through and their feelings.
  • Limit their exposure to media coverage of the event.

How to prepare for an emergency

It’s helpful to plan and gather the supplies and information you might need in an emergency. A few items to prepare include:

  • Lists of phone numbers.
  • Extra medication.
  • Important documents.
  • A supply kit with water, food, first aid, flashlights, clothes, and other essentials.
  • Portable chargers.
  • Pet food, if needed.

In addition, make sure to monitor emergency conditions in your area, and have plans in place so that you’re ready to respond if you’re in danger.

Of course, preparation isn’t prevention, but you’ll at least be ready should a crisis arise.
