Medicare plans for your whole health

Original Medicare includes Medicare Parts A and B. Part A (hospital insurance) covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, lab tests, surgery, and home healthcare. Part B (medical insurance) includes doctor visits, outpatient care, and medical equipment.

You can sign up for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) at any Social Security office or sign up online in about 10 minutes. You may need the following when you apply:

• Your Social Security card (or record of your number)
• Your original birth certificate
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
• A W-2 form if you’re still working

If you’re receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits at least four months before your 65^th birthday, you’re automatically enrolled in Parts A and B. Social Security will send you Medicare information and a Medicare card prior to your 65^th birthday.

Once you've signed up for Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can enroll in Medicare Advantage during your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period, which includes the three months before the month of your 65th birthday through the three months after your 65th birthday.

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience certain life events, such as moving out of your current plan’s service area or losing your employer-based health coverage.

You can also add, switch, or drop your plan during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, from October 15 through December 7 each year.
